Strike 3, They’re Out!

Finally. After months of threatening to strike, Santa Cruz bus operators walked out last night. Early delays were touted as being for the benefit of their passengers, about whom they profess to care so much. Yet, when it came right down to it, they walked off with no advance warning to riders.

I wonder how many folks waited fruitlessly at bus stops this morning?

Oh, No! Sorry about that especially for Steve! What exactly does that mean for him, any change. I’ll say my prayers and hope things settle soon. Love you both

We don’t know what it means really. At least beyond midnight phone calls and an early morning today. Maybe he won’t be able to go to Oregon next week. If he doesn’t, I’ll probably cancel, but we’ll see. So far the strike is a “hurry up and wait” kind of scenario. No bus service means not much is actually going on, although his ParaCruz service is still operating. I’m sure they’ll get around to scheduling some negotiations but so far, nobody knows what to expect.

Sorry to hear about the strike! Hang in there Steve, we are thinking about you and hoping for a quick end to this.

Laura, why would you cancel? Isn’t this more of a reason to seek possibilities elsewhere for you two?

Maybe. Maybe not. Unless we can explore together, I think we’ll wait a while. BTW … you should have your book back tomorrow. Sorry it took me so long!

It appears I wasn’t the only one to find the bus driver’s claim to care about their riders a bit preposterous in the face of their no-notice walk-out. The following letter was sent to the UTU Local 23 web site. Amusing because nobody had bothered to update their email links (for years) so it ended up in the hands of former union reps who now reside on the dark side.

    To whom it may concern:

I wanted to let you know that thanks to your decision to call a strike without warning I had to ride my bike over Mount Madonna from Watsonville to Gilroy in the middle of the night to get home on Tuesday. What were you doing Tuesday night? Maybe congratulating yourselves?

Whatever sympathy I might have had for UTU23 workers is demolished by your arrogant decision to strike without giving riders any warning or chance to make alternative plans. What do you hope to gain by rushing to the decision to strike without giving riders fair notice? Who do you think you are?

If you hoped to anger citizens, then you have succeeded, but perhaps counter to your goals, my anger and that of many others focuses squarely on the union in this case. I believe labor justice is important, but your thoughtless, rash actions suggest a total lack of consideration for anyone but yourselves.

I hope the drivers and the Board are able to come to an agreement soon. But I also believe that as leaders of the UTU23 you all deserve to lose your jobs.

    Sincerely,
    Peter Li,
