Is that the “A. m. croceum – Santa Cruz Long-toed Salamander.” Are they salt-water amphibs? Can they crawl through up your mountain to get your goldfish? Doesn’t seem possible! Tell me more about these creatures. Dad

Dad, click on the words “Giant California Salamander” and you’ll get a page with more information about the handsome speciman we found living under redwood duff just below the barn, where the “power house” used to be. I was cleaning up some debris from its removal, and there s/he was. Compared to the California Newts we see all the time, he was quite a monster! In reading about them, I learned they can actually be somewhat aggressive when threatened but this was not at all. I think he was quite shocked to be disturbed.

I think he’s fabulous! Look at his beautiful spots, like a cheetah. I’d take a salamander over goldfish, but that’s just me. 😉
