Ode to a Princess

Princess Westi - 1988

I stand in awe
Heart brimming and inspired
By her boundless spirit
Lively and wonderful.

Then and now.

First and always
There was adoration
Of her joyous bounce
Snuggly and playful.

Despair followed
As dissatisfaction prevailed
Perceiving others to have more
At times overruling
Essential happiness.

Self-proclaimed princess
Laughingly acknowledged
Fondly accommodated by the doting King
Source of friction with the reluctant Queen.

But no more.

Still a princess
Graduated from girlhood
To lovely woman marked by
Compassionate wisdom
Graceful, thoughtful, loving.

I marvel at her
Focus and inner strength
Her evolution inspires belief
In the promise of the future.

No longer reluctant
I proudly proclaim myself
A subject of Princess Westi.

I stand in awe.
I bow to the Princess.

This post is overdue, as I’ve said before, not for lack of caring or intention. Sometimes it takes a while to say what you mean. And even with time, it’s not always adequate. The above is my attempt at expressing my sentiments about Westi. A poet I am not, but poetry seemed fitting, and so I tried. Although inspired by her college graduation from San José State University (she finished her degree in December 2004, but “walked” last month), a mere congratulatory announcement felt lacking. Westi was never “just” a student. She integrated her studies into a full working, living, breathing life. And her college graduation, although a significant achievement, is just one of so many milestone accomplishments in her life. Not the least of which is the way she has blossomed as a person into an absolutely wonderful human being. That’s not the stuff of ceremony and announcements, but it’s most important to me.

That said … Woo, you worked hard and achieved much. We bask in your glory. CONGRATULATIONS!

Well, I think your attempt at poetry was great – and fitting!

Congratulations Westi!!!!! We are so proud of you and also in awe of your accomplishments. We wish only the best future for you in your career and family life! (Though, with this womenhood, we at times miss the ever so fast, bouncing, talking Westi – we can actually understand you now when you talk on the phone – tee hee!) Again – congratulations and we look to see what you next adventure will bring.

I must add my congratulations, too. How proud can a father be? How could a father ask for a better daughter? Loving, caring, supportive. Adventurous and artistic. Not only all of the above, but great taste in men, too… that’s my girl!!!!

Late, but worth the wait. I’m truly touched by your words Laura, and have to admit one thing- I don’t see myself as a princess anymore. Ironically, once I set it free, it became true. Life is so fascinating that way. Thank you everyone else for your sweet words-they mean a lot to me! And Dad, I’m glad this post took you from silent and passive reader to blogger. I hope to see more of your posts in the future. And yes, I have excellent taste in men, but having Daddy’s approval makes it just that much sweeter. Love you all.

You are worth all the sweet words! Plus not only do you have dad’s approval but you have ours too. Dad’s are always the most important though I think – maybe that is mostly for girls. We have gotten attached to Mike so you better keep him around forever, okay! That award you gave him said you appreciate him! Even though we gave you bad time about him doing everything I know that you also do lots for him also. Loved the chicken coop photos with you and Mike! love ya

Now worries Sharon, he ain’t goin’ anywhere! I’m crazy about that kid. I love him now as much as or more than ever. I’ll get to do plenty of the house work if Mike gets this job with San Jose Fire anyway. Besides, who actually pays the bills on time, makes dinner, grocery shops, folds laundry, and sweeps (just to name a few)? ME!

    A wonderful thing is a Tigger;
    A Tigger’s a wonderful thing.
Their tops are made out of rubber,
their bottoms are made out of spring
    They’re bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy,
    fun, fun, fun, fun, fun,
    The most wonderful thing
    about Tiggers is:
    You’re the only one!

Our Tig has all growed up!

Westi, I will always think of you as Tigger- But you have become so much more than that! You have grown to be an inspring woman and deserve all the good fortune that life will undoubtedly send you.
You have many more challenges to conquer. With the love and wisdom that you were evidently born with, you will see nothing but success!
    -Ms. Anthrope
