Paulson’s Invade Gulf Coast

Before picture of Nicole's new place in Rockport, TX

Nicole has arrived in Rockport but her furniture hasn’t. No matter … thanks to lawn furniture and air mattresses, she will be comfortable until it comes (hopefully) Sunday. In the meantime, Steve and Dennis alternate fishing with building her a little dog yard for Ranger. Nancy organizes and feeds us. And me… well… I try not to be too cranky in the sticky heat (not very successfully yesterday, unfortunately.)

Nicole flew into San Antonio on Sunday and we relocated to the same (thanks again Nicole for those KOA gift certificates!) so Daddy could help her buy a car. It was stressful but she is now the owner of a Cadillac Catera. It appears to be in good shape … one owner and she’s got all the records … and it was a bargain. We’re waiting to find out what’s wrong with it but so far, so good! It’s pictured next to her new little cottage in Rockport above. It’s tiny but cute as a button, and walking distance to the library and my new favorite veterinarian. The water and her aunt and uncle are close by, and her landlord is generously allowing us to camp on a large grassy part of the property. This is the “before” photo. I’ll have to post more when she has a fence and furniture, as well as today’s fishing report. Dinner should by yummy tonight!

Hey, Nicole, nice car and house. Laura said the landlord liked plants and they are really pretty. I am eager to see more soon. Laura, remember you are sending me an address. Also yours at Canyon Lake when you have it.
Enjoy you time in TX! That fresh fish sounds good. We
have had fresh walleye once this summer. Neighbor didn’t
get even one fish this week! We are off to Fort Wayne in
morning but will be back in evening. Steve comes home at
5 am Sat. plus we have other stuff here. love you all

Indeed dinner was yummy. It turned out to be hot wings, rather than fish because we didn’t catch anything to put on the table. We caught a couple of bait fish known as “Lady fish”, a couple of hard head catfish and three stingrays. Still, it was a wonderful day on the water. There was a pleasant breeze and relatively calm water where we spent the majority of the day, so it was a good time for brothers to be hangin’ out in the boat. The real fun began when we changed locations to try to find the fish. The water was as clear as glass and so warm that it didn’t really make much difference if you got wet. Not only did we get to watch yet another set of dolphins swimming very nearby (very common sighting here, and an indicator that trout are in the area), we found ourselves surrounded by schools (literally thousands) of trout swimming all around our boat. They were completely disinterested in our bait. Then we heard what sounded like raindrops on water. Looking up, we saw huge numbers of tiny fish leaping from the water in waves (probably trying to outrun predators)coming directly towards us. As they approached, they split to either side of the boat. I felt like I was in a National Geographic special. As Dennis says, “That’s why they call it “fishing”, not “catching”. We’ll try again Saturday, today is all about building a dog yard for Ranger.

Hey, Steve, you are just having too, too much fun on the Gulf! I am so glad you are getting to hang out with Dennis! Steve got home safely from OR but without his luggage. Still not here. He and Kathy are off to OH for a race he has tomorrow. Can’t believe the fires in Santa Cruz County. God saved me from that while you were there. And so far I haven’t had to worry too much about Wes and Mike! We had a nice family day yesterday but hope we don’t have to go for funeral again soon. My family has had too many lately. Shaun is off to MS with kids on mission trip and Michele is trying to get moved at school. It is quiet here but storm headed our way they say. Weather has been great and looks that way next week and then we will be in cold country! Although it is pretty nice there also. Hope Nicole gets her things tomorrow. love you all

Steve just called and they are off the water. Didn’t sound like they had as much fun as Thursday but there will be fish for dinner tonight! Steve caught a Bonnethead shark. Pictures to follow …

The most recent fire in Santa Cruz is almost contained now but 10 more families have lost their homes. And many animals died. I am so sad today.
