Don\u2019t waste your pity on the one gone.
\nIf she was awake, she\u2019ll stick around –
\na milkweed pod now burst open
\nand blown by the wind. She is
\neverywhere at once, untamable.
\nHear her voice, still laughing.<\/p>\n
Even the one unawake, the soul barely
\ncracked out of it\u2019s tight-fisted shell,
\nmerely sleeps through the next life,
\nto be wakened gently in time for the
\nresurrection. If I were God, that\u2019s how
\nI\u2019d design it, and surely God has
\na bigger heart than mine.<\/p>\n
For the ready-made angel,
\nthere are several jobs
\nfor which she\u2019s been
\ntraining all her life:
\n imaginary friend of only children,
\n prophetess to taunted adolescent,
\n keeper of lovers gone but not forgotten,
\n keeper of hope in countries not forsaken,
\n witness to the small kindness,
\n profligate spender of praise<\/p>\n
Too shy to sing, she\u2019ll stand behind,
\nelbows jutting like pointy wings, and
\nchiding: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to eat all
\nthe problems of the world in one bite.
\nDigest a little first, it will keep.\u201d<\/p>\n
She will tell you that you are
\nan otherworldly being,
\na leap in a new evolution,
\na translator of birdsong.
\nShe will ask to skywrite
\nyour poem in the clouds.
\nIt will be harder to believe
\nwithout her voice, but your ego
\nnever lies this extravagantly.<\/p>\n
In fact, dare I say, bless
\nthe passing that releases the one
\nthat we would hoard and keep.
\nAs spirit, she covers the earth,
\nrelaying our message of love
\nmore reliably than words,
\nwhich often confuse what we mean.
\nSmall and nimble, she is everywhere,
\nwillful and fierce, at last.
\nThe horizons dimple her smile.
\nShare her unquenchable delight.<\/p>\n
